Discrete manufacturing typically involves a series of steps on a single piece of equipment to create the final product.Electronic and mechanical parts assembly and part machining are typical examples of such industries.Both process-based and discrete industries use the same types of control systems,sensors and networks.Some facilities are a mix of discrete and process-based manufacturing.Although the control systems used in distribution and manufacturing are very similar in operation,they are different in some ways.The main difference is that DCS or PLC-controlled subsystems are usually located in narrower factory or plant-centric areas,compared to geographically dispersed SCADA sites.DCS and PLC communications usually use local area network(LAN)technology which is usually more reliable and high-speed long-distance communication systems used by SCADA systems.
