通讯网络把过程站和人机界面连成一个系统。通讯网络有几种不同的结构行式。如总线式、环形和星形。总线形在逻辑上也是环形的。星形的只适用于小系统。不论是环形还是总线形，一般都采用广播式。其它一些协议方式已用的较少。通讯网络的速率在10M和100M左右。
